For many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), breaking into international markets can feel like plotting a path through a complex maze – full of potential pathways, but impossible to navigate without the right support and guidance, particularly when targeting geographically and psychologically distant markets. Market Scoping International (MSI) has been proud to partner with exporTT since 2016 to help Trinidad and Tobago’s exporters find clear routes to Europe’s high-value markets.
Two landmark initiatives—Fit 4 Europe (2016-2018) and Fit 4 Europe II (2023-2024)—have played a critical role in equipping local firms with the training, knowledge, confidence, and capabilities to thrive in European markets. Whilst each project was shaped by its own context and goals, both share a common purpose: empowering SMEs to convert export potential into export success through co-creation and the power of partnership.
The original Fit 4 Europe project focussed on enhancing the export readiness of 26 Trinidad and Tobago firms across goods and services sectors. Many of these businesses had strong products / offers but needed clearer routes to European markets.
The programme delivered practical tools—market intelligence, EU buyer expectations, guidance on product adaptation, and hands-on training in pricing, logistics, e-commerce, branding, and compliance. Crucially, it created opportunities for direct engagement with European importers, helping companies understand market demand and to forge early commercial links, culminating in a partner targeting mission to the UK, France and the Netherlands.
Fit 4 Europe established a solid foundation for export development in the non-energy sector. It demonstrated that SMEs, when equipped with the right insights and support, can meaningfully diversify their markets beyond the region. Participating companies formed partnerships with European Partners, which endure today, almost 10 years on from when they were first forged.

Building on the success of Fit 4 Europe, Fit 4 Europe II took the model further. This second iteration—funded through the CARIFORUM-EU EPA and CSME Standby Facility under the 11th EDF—was designed to deliver deeper, more customised support to 20 high-potential SMEs across goods and services, this time using a virtual model.
What set this phase apart was its tailor-made, data-driven approach. Each participating firm received a full export readiness gap analysis, allowing MSI to craft personalised development plans. Over the course of 15 months, companies benefited from one-to-one coaching, capacity-building, and expert support to meet EU standards, refine branding, strengthen operations, and prepare for growth.
Fit 4 Europe II leveraged virtual platforms to connect the most export ready firms with buyers in Germany and Sweden, enabling exporters to explore two of Europe’s most dynamic and quality- driven markets, and also to connect to potential partners more widely across the European region.
The project placed special emphasis on women-led enterprises, rural SMEs, and creative professionals, reflecting an inclusive approach to export development and ensuring the benefits extended across the economy.

Fit 4 Europe and Fit 4 Europe II are more than just two capacity-building programmes—they represent a broader shift in how Trinidad and Tobago approaches export diversification. They have:
Most importantly, these projects showcase the transformative power of partnership and co-creation. When development agencies, exporters, and technical experts collaborate with a shared vision and goal, barriers can be broken down and opportunities and markets unlocked.
As demand for Caribbean products and services rises across Europe, programmes like Fit 4 Europe and Fit 4 Europe II are essential for ensuring that SMEs are ready to seize those opportunities. MSI remains committed to supporting exporters on this journey—helping them not only access international markets, but succeed in them.
The story of these two projects is a story of ambition, co-creation, resilience, and possibility. And for many of the firms involved, it’s only the beginning.
